KIP & CAF Projects

Meet Patrick's Replacement: Erin Ottosen

Hi! I'm Erin Ottosen, and I'm the new communication officer in AU's Advancement Office in Edmonton. I replaced Patrick Mears.

For the time being I'm looking after communications related to KIP (Knowledge Infrastructure Program) and CAF (Community Adjustment Fund). One of the key communications in this area is FOCUS, the e-newsletter about KIP and CAF projects. My position is CAF-funded and ends March 31, 2011.

I'm new to this position, but not so new to AU. My first gig at AU was working in the Library for the summer at the age of 18, and since then I've held a few AU positions related to communications, marketing, writing and editing. My favourite work is writing and editing.

AU arguably forced me to go back to college and make something of myself. At 18, I had dropped out of the music program at Red Deer College and moved back in with my parents in Athabasca. The only work I could find was housekeeping at the Hillside Motel, and I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with myself. Becoming a rock star seemed less and less likely. In the spring, AU started looking for summer students, and I became desperate to quit the motel and get a cushy summer desk job at the university. But there was a catch -- to be eligible for a summer job, you had to be going to college or university in the fall. So... I enrolled at Grant MacEwan! Life planning solved. Thanks AU!

I have great affection for AU, and I'm very pleased to be back. It's been a lot of fun getting into reporter mode to work on the FOCUS newsletter. If you've got story ideas for FOCUS, please let me know! And please also get in touch with me if you have other ideas or suggestions for KIP and CAF communications.
